The Constitution of the Confederate States of America.

In framing the Constitution of the Confederate States, the authors adopted, with numerous elisions and additions, the language of the Constitution of the United States, and followed the same order of arrangement of articles and sections. The changes made in this adaptation of the old Constitution are here shown. The parts stricken out are enclosed in [ ] brackets, and the new matter added in framing the Confederate Constitution is printed in italics.

Article I

SECTION VIII.

The Congress shall have Power

(G)  To establish Post Offices and post [Roads] routes; but the expenses of the Post Office Department, after the first day of March, in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and sixty-three, shall be paid out of its own revenues;

Even in 1861, it must have been apparent to the Confederacy that a government post office was an abomination!! In their revision of the Constitution, they wanted it to pay its own way in two years.
 
From our 21st Century hindsight, we can go them one better and insist that all Post Office assets be sold in well advertised lots, (perhaps organized by Zip Code) to the highest bidder within two years, and that State governments are prohibited from acquiring the assets.

Considering the privitization of the postal function, between UPS, Fedex, DHL, etc, we might not even need the post office.

I am in total agreement with you.
 
Also, the internet is an excellent replacement. I pay most of my bills via internet and I cannot remember the last time I "mailed" a personal letter to anyone.
