Anyone planning a trip to Ouray for more than a day or so might consider hiking the Ouray perimeter trail that pretty much encircles the town. It provides some stunning view of the town and surrounding areas.

However for non-experienced hikers please note the following.

1) Some sections of the trail are steep and/or have dangerous dropoffs. If heights bother you these sections should be avoided (ask at the Ouray Visitors Center next to the Hot Springs). A hiking stick or ski pole is recommended for the not-so-young.

2) Hiking boots or other sturdy shoes should be worn. Some sections have loose rock and/or slippery mud (after rain) and wearing casual footwear can result in injury or worse. Slipping off a high trail will probably ruin your day.

In the interests of full disclosure I'm a member of the non-profit Ouray Trails Group (http://www.ouraytrails.org).

PS: I'm also a long time Ayn Rand fan and new Ouray resident. I hope to meet some of you on September 2nd at the Beaumont Hotel (http://beaumonthotel.com).
